Simon Phillips, Director

Simon Phillips is an internationally acclaimed, multi–award-winning director known for epic storytelling, emotional clarity, and visually striking theatrical worlds. He has held major artistic leadership roles as Artistic Director of both the Melbourne Theatre Company and the State Theatre Company of South Australia, overseeing large-scale productions that balance commercial appeal with artistic rigor.
Simon’s musical credits include PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT (which has been performed internationally for the past 16 years including the West End and Broadway), THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, URINETOWN THE MUSICAL, COMPANY, THE THREPENNY OPERA, HIGH SOCIETY, CABARET, LADIES IN BLACK and MURIEL’S WEDDING, THE MUSICAL based on the successful film of the same name. His huge outdoor production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA for HOSH Opera Australia was performed on the Sydney Harbour stage.
Simon’s opera credits include THE TURK IN ITALY, L’ELISIR D’AMORE, FALSTAFF, LA BOHEME, and LULU for Opera Australia, THE MAGIC FLUTE, DON GIOVANNI and LE COMPTE D’ORY for Opera New Zealand, and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM and BILLY BUDD for Hamburg State Opera.
